Has Skype Become the Digital Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Known as the DarkComet?

Has Skype Become the Digital Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Known as the DarkCometIt looks like nothing is sacred in cyber space these days. One must continuously think of how to protect their computers from spyware, viruses, and Malware or else.... Still, there have always been those trusted sites that you could use with relatively comfortable and safe. For me, Skype was one such site. Skype has always been a beloved communication resource used freely by most for meetings, family chats etc…Now, even Skype has potentially fallen prey to false encryption.

The new tales from this "encrypt" has been referred to as the DarkComet, dirty Spyware used to watch and track the moves of activists in Syria. This fact has people asking themselves, has Skype become the digital wolf in sheep's clothing known as DarkComet? At least, that is what has been reported by DJ Pangburn in his article written for the deathandtaxesmag site. Check out the alarming details below:

Has Skype Become the Digital Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Known as the DarkComet?

Has Skype Become the Digital Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Known as the DarkCometAs the Syrian revolution continues to unfold, a new chapter in the country’s cyber-warfare is currently being written.

Syrian activists are being targeted with spyware that is disguised as encryption software…

When activists download the application, “Skype Encryption v2.1″ appears in the users downloads folder. When the application is launched, users are given the option to “Encrypt” or “Decrypt.”

If users click “Encrypt,” a message appears telling users to wait for encryption. Once the Trojan has been downloaded onto a computer, the application launches a window that reads”Your Connections are Now Completely Encrypted!”

Once installed, DarkComet is able to capture webcam activity, disable notification settings for specific antivirus programs, record key strokes, and steal passwords. EFF notes that unlike the DarkComet version discovered by TrendMicro, this version “is not detectable by any anti-virus software at this time.”

It’s terrifying to imagine that a regime as murderous as Syria’s could be watching its activists in such an Orwellian way. Hopefully Syrian hacktivists, with some international help, have a reliable means of encrypting their Skype communications.
